Kevin O’Malley, a former part-owner of the San Diego Padres, respected minor league baseball executive, and Los Angeles, California native, passed away at the age of 50 following complications related to sepsis. His death has left his family, friends, colleagues, and the baseball community mourning the loss of a dedicated sports executive whose passion for the game and commitment to those around him defined both his career and personal life.
According to his family, O’Malley died on Tuesday while receiving hospice care in Santa Barbara, California, after battling complications from sepsis. His father, former Los Angeles Dodgers president Peter O’Malley, confirmed that Kevin became ill while traveling on business in New York the previous fall. Despite receiving additional medical treatment after returning to Los Angeles, his condition continued to decline.
Born and raised in Los Angeles, Kevin was part of one of baseball’s most influential families. He was the grandson of Walter O’Malley, the longtime owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers who helped bring Major League Baseball to the West Coast and was later inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. His father, Peter O’Malley, served as president of the Dodgers for nearly three decades, continuing the family’s enduring legacy in professional baseball.
Inspired by that legacy, Kevin built a distinguished career of his own in the sport. During the late 1990s, he worked within the Dodgers organization, gaining experience with the Great Falls affiliate in Montana and at the club’s historic Dodgertown complex in Vero Beach, Florida. Kevin later became co-founder and owner of Top of the Third Inc., an organization that operated several minor league baseball franchises, including the Stockton Mudville Nine and the Visalia Rawhide. In 2012, O’Malley joined members of the Seidler and O’Malley families as part of the ownership group that acquired the San Diego Padres. His father reflected on his son’s lifelong passion, saying that while family always came first, baseball was a very close second.
Beyond the diamond, Kevin was also an accomplished businessman. In 2010, he founded Carmelina Capital Partners, a growth equity investment firm through which he supported businesses with strategic guidance and long-term vision. He attended Harvard-Westlake School, where he played baseball, before continuing his education and athletic career at the University of Pennsylvania. Kevin is survived by his wife, Allison; his children, Grace, Brendan, Brooke, and Margaret; his father, Peter O’Malley; his sister, Katherine; his brother, Brian; as well as two nieces and two nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Annette.
