FORSTYTH COUNTY, GEORGIA — A large-scale law enforcement operation led to a temporary shelter-in-place order, road closures, and a SWAT response in Forsyth County on Tuesday following reports of gunfire during a domestic-related incident. Authorities later confirmed that the situation has been resolved and two individuals have been taken into custody.
According to the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded shortly after 8:30 a.m. to reports of shots fired in the area of Kelly Mill Road and Barrett Downs Drive. Investigators stated that the incident stemmed from a dispute between individuals who were known to one another. During the exchange of gunfire, stray bullets reportedly struck a nearby residence, including a child’s bedroom, prompting an immediate emergency response and heightened safety measures.
Upon arrival, deputies secured the area and issued a shelter-in-place order for nearby residents while establishing a perimeter. Due to concerns that an armed suspect may have barricaded himself inside a home, SWAT teams and crisis negotiators were deployed. Kelly Mill Road was temporarily closed between Johnson Road and Barrett Downs Drive, and motorists were advised to avoid the area while the operation was ongoing.
After a search of the residence, authorities determined that the suspect was no longer inside, which led to a broader manhunt involving K-9 units and multiple agencies. A suspect was later apprehended after a resident reported suspicious activity in a nearby backyard. A second individual connected to the incident was also taken into custody.
The sheriff’s office confirmed that one suspect is facing an aggravated assault charge, with additional charges possible as the investigation continues. No injuries to deputies or members of the public were reported during the operation.
Following the arrests, officials lifted the shelter-in-place order and reopened Kelly Mill Road to traffic. Investigators remain at the scene and are continuing to review evidence and circumstances surrounding the shooting. Authorities are also urging anyone with additional information to come forward.
Officials thanked residents for their cooperation and patience during the emergency response, noting that public safety remained the top priority throughout the operation.
