The Dearborn, Michigan, and Metro Detroit Arab-American community are mourning the tragic loss of Qasim Abbas Al-Khafaji, also known as Kassem AlKhafaji, who died in a workplace accident on Wednesday, July 1, 2026. The 23-year-old lost his life after a trench collapsed at a commercial construction site in Handy Township, Livingston County, leaving family, friends, coworkers, and community members devastated.

According to the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office, the fatal incident occurred at approximately 2:30 p.m. near the intersection of Grand River Avenue and Nicholson Road. Qasim was working inside an excavation trench during the installation of underground storage tanks when the trench walls suddenly collapsed, trapping him beneath a large volume of soil.

Coworkers immediately began digging in an effort to free him while sheriff’s deputies, firefighters, and emergency medical personnel rushed to the scene. Rescue crews successfully extricated Qasim from the collapsed trench and immediately initiated lifesaving measures. Despite extensive resuscitation efforts, he was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA) has launched a comprehensive investigation into the incident alongside local authorities. Investigators are examining workplace safety procedures, including whether appropriate trench protection systems, such as trench boxes, shoring, or proper sloping, were in place at the time of the collapse. The investigation remains ongoing.

While authorities work to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the accident, those who knew Qasim are remembering the remarkable life he lived. Friends, relatives, and members of the local community describe him as a generous, humble, and compassionate young man who was always willing to help others. He was especially admired for his service as a devoted Khadim, dedicating his time to supporting his religious community and those in need.

Family members have announced that Fatiha (Islamic condolence gatherings) will be held on Thursday, July 2, and Friday, July 3, 2026, beginning at 3:00 p.m., at Husseiniya & Mawkib Khidmat Al-Hussein (A.S.), located at 16341 W. Warren Avenue, Detroit, Michigan. A memorial meal will be served during the Friday gathering as family, friends, and community members come together to honor Qasim’s life and legacy.

Although his life ended far too soon, Qasim Abbas Al-Khafaji leaves behind a legacy of faith, generosity, compassion, and service that will continue to inspire all who knew him.
