The Theresa, Wisconsin, community is mourning the passing of Joel Bernhard, the beloved founder of Confections For Any Occasion, who died on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, at the age of 47. Surrounded by his family at St. Agnes Hospital in Fond du Lac, Joel leaves behind a remarkable legacy of perseverance, faith, generosity, and craftsmanship that touched countless lives throughout Wisconsin.

Known for his award-winning handmade chocolates and warm, welcoming personality, Joel was far more than a talented confectioner. Customers, friends, and neighbors remember him as someone who greeted everyone with kindness, shared his gifts generously, and created an atmosphere where every visitor felt like family. Following news of his passing, heartfelt tributes poured in from loyal customers, local organizations, and members of the Theresa community who reflected on the profound impact he made through both his business and his compassionate spirit.

Born on November 8, 1978, to Ron and Karen (Zedler) Bernhard, Joel faced extraordinary challenges from an early age. After developing a brain tumor at just two years old, he underwent multiple surgeries that ultimately resulted in the loss of his eyesight. Rather than allowing those obstacles to define him, Joel became an inspiring example of resilience and determination. He often encouraged others with his personal motto: “It’s not what you can’t do, it’s what you can do.”

Joel attended Franklin Elementary School in Oshkosh, where he learned Braille and mobility skills before graduating from Lomira High School. During his school years, he actively participated in band, 4-H, forensics, the Future Farmers of America (FFA), and the Fond du Lac County Fair, demonstrating his enthusiasm for learning and community involvement.

A devoted member of St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Theresa, Joel’s Christian faith remained the cornerstone of his life. After earning a degree in Culinary Arts from Moraine Park Technical College, he transformed his passion for baking and chocolate-making into a successful career by opening Confections For Any Occasion in 2001. The specialty candy shop quickly became a beloved destination, earning a reputation for exceptional confections and heartfelt customer service.

Even after a devastating fire temporarily closed the business in 2024, Joel remained steadfast in his determination to rebuild. Encouraged by the overwhelming support of his staff, customers, and the Theresa community, he continued pursuing his dream with optimism and unwavering dedication.

Throughout his life, Joel faced numerous health challenges, including multiple surgeries and both liver and kidney transplants. Despite these hardships, he remained actively involved in his business, continuing to mentor employees and guide daily operations even during hospital stays. His courage, resilience, and positive outlook inspired healthcare professionals, coworkers, family members, and friends alike.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Joel was remembered as a devoted son, loving brother, proud uncle, loyal friend, and compassionate community member. His generosity extended far beyond his chocolate shop, and his willingness to encourage others left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.

Joel is survived by his mother, Karen Bernhard; his brother, Mike (Tammy) Bernhard; his nieces, Samantha (Aidric) Mertens and Sabrina Bernhard (fiancé Brandon Evans); along with many extended family members, friends, employees, and loyal customers. He was preceded in death by his father, Ronald Bernhard; his sister, Angela Bernhard; his maternal grandparents, Lester and Bette Zedler; his paternal grandparents, Carl and Gladys Bernhard; and his uncle, Ron Schwenk.

A Christian Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, at 4:00 p.m. at St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Theresa, with visitation beginning at 2:00 p.m. Interment will follow at Union Cemetery in Theresa. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, the Theresa Fire Department, or the Theresa Historical Society.

Although Joel Bernhard’s passing leaves an immeasurable void, his legacy will continue through the business he built, the lives he inspired, and the countless acts of kindness he shared throughout his life. His resilience, unwavering faith, generous heart, and extraordinary talent will forever be remembered by his family, friends, customers, and the entire Theresa community.

May he rest in eternal peace.
