GLENDALE, ARIZONA — The wildland firefighting community is mourning the tragic loss of Nicholas “Nick” Hutcherson, a 27-year-old U.S. Forest Service firefighter who died in the line of duty while responding to a wildfire near the Colorado–Utah border that later became part of the Snyder Fire. His death has left family members, friends, fellow firefighters, and communities across the country grieving the loss of a dedicated public servant.
Nick proudly served as a member of the U.S. Forest Service’s Pittman Valley Helitack Crew, where he earned the respect of colleagues through his professionalism, courage, and unwavering commitment to protecting lives, property, and public lands. Fellow firefighters remember him as a dependable teammate whose calm demeanor, humility, and willingness to help others exemplified the highest ideals of the wildland firefighting profession.
According to officials, Hutcherson was among several firefighters responding to the rapidly evolving wildfire when a fatal incident occurred during suppression efforts. The tragedy claimed the lives of three U.S. Forest Service firefighters and injured two others.
Nick died alongside fellow firefighters Emily Barker of Michigan and Sydney Watson of Alabama.
