OAKLAND CITY, INDIANA — Family, friends, classmates, and the Evansville community are mourning the heartbreaking loss of Charlie Lakjohn, a 17-year-old whose life was tragically cut short following a drowning incident at New Lake Campground near Oakland City on Monday afternoon.
According to the Gibson County Coroner, Charlie Lakjohn, of Evansville, was identified as the teenager who died in the incident. Officials with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) said emergency crews were dispatched to the campground at approximately 5:25 p.m. after receiving reports of a missing person in the water.
A large-scale search and rescue operation quickly followed, bringing together personnel from Patoka Township Fire Department, Oakland City Police Department, the Gibson County Sheriff’s Office, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, and the Evansville Fire Department. After an extensive search, Charlie was located and recovered from the water shortly after 7:00 p.m.
Family members who had gathered at the scene were informed of the tragic outcome as emergency personnel concluded their search efforts. Following the incident, officials with New Lake Campground announced that the beach area would remain closed until further notice.
Charlie’s passing has left an immeasurable void in the lives of those who knew and loved him.
